Ingredients

  • 2 chicken breasts
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 cup All purpose flour
  • 1 onion
  • 2 tablespoons of sour lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 5 tablespoons oil
Instructions

  • The first step towards a mouthwatering Chicken Schnitzel starts with the chicken itself. Slice your chicken breasts horizontally until they're about 2 centimeters thick. Then, place a sheet of plastic wrap over them. If you don't own a meat tenderizer hammer, fret not - the back of a frying pan works just as well! Gently pound the chicken until it's about 1 centimeter thick.
  • Once your chicken is perfectly pounded, it's time to give it some flavor. In a bowl, combine tart lemon juice, salt, black pepper, and thyme, stirring until well mixed. Add your chicken pieces, massaging the mixture onto them to infuse them with flavor. To take things to the next level, coarsely chop some onion and layer it amongst the chicken pieces, lending the chicken a wonderful aroma. Cover your bowl and let it rest in the fridge for an hour or more to really let those flavors seep in.
  • After your chicken is well-marinated, it's time to set up your dredging stations. Crack eggs into a bowl, add milk, and beat them together until thoroughly combined. Pour all-purpose flour into another bowl and breadcrumbs into a third. If your breadcrumbs are unseasoned, give them a flavor boost by adding some salt, turmeric, and black pepper.
  • Pour oil into a large frying pan and let it heat up. Take your flavorful chicken pieces, first roll them in the flour, then dip them in the egg mixture, and finally, coat them in the breadcrumbs. When they're fully covered, they're ready for frying! Gently place them in the heated oil, and once one side is golden and crispy, turn them over to fry the other side. Once both sides are perfectly golden, remove them from the oil and place them on a paper towel to drain the excess oil, keeping them crispy.
  • Finally, it's time to enjoy the fruits of your labor! Lay your crispy, golden schnitzels in a serving dish. They're wonderful served with ketchup, or if you'd like to keep things traditional, you might want to serve them with some fried potatoes on the side. Enjoy this Chicken Schnitzel Recipe that will transport you straight to the heart of Germany from the comfort of your own home.

The Etymology of Schnitzel

The word “Schnitzel” might seem like a mouthful, but once you taste this dish, it’s a word you’ll never forget. According to food historians, the term “Schnitzel” hails from the German verb “schnitzen,” which means to slice or cut. Considering the dish involves thin slices of meat, it’s no surprise this name was chosen. The power of language, especially when it comes to food, is truly remarkable, don’t you think?

Cultural Significance of Schnitzel in Germany

As you travel through the various regions of Germany, you’d realize that Schnitzel is not just a dish; it’s a part of their culinary heritage. It’s deeply embedded in their gastronomical culture. In conversations with local families, they may invite you to partake in one of their most well-known dishes, the “Mandel Schnitten.” While the dish’s roots are similar to our beloved Schnitzel, it offers its unique spin, adding to the culinary diversity of the region.
